ikea - usa versus aus prices

this is a definite rant!
and i'm not ashamed to say it.

i have been doing some wee research into some bling for my girls bedrooms - chandeliers and the sort.

ikea is inexpensive (albeit a wee hike from canberra - but i've been known to do a few road trips to get me some ikea love!!)- so i figured i'd check out what they had.

here's the kristaller ceiling fixture shown on the australian ikea website.....

web link here
not a bad price australian-wise - i've been checking around and it's hard to get some bling for much cheaper.
not looking for something too fancy - just something a bit more special than a globe!!

however - i saw someone pin this same chandy on pinterest with a very low price attached and thought i'd check out the ikea usa website to see what was going on.......

web link here

yeah - you read that right - less than half the price of the australian version.

yes we are 'way down here' - miles and miles away - and we're on a different power supply from the usa - but tell me dear readers....(if there is anyone out there....).... why do we have to pay more than twice the amount than our american friends to the north - and our dollar is higher than ever???????????

really cranky right now.

nuff said.

  1. Sucks. Likely they did the prices ages ago when our dollar wasn't so strong against the US? Shame :(

  2. I've been ticked about this for ages! Everything is so much more expensive in Australia. No wonder the retail sector is having a hard time now that no-one has any money!

  3. This annoys me to know end! I follow a few US decorating blogs, and everytime they blog about a great ikea find and how cheap it is, I look up the same product to find it literally double the price!! And the aussie dollar is at parity with the US right now!! Its absolutely ridiculous, and so frustrating!

  4. I wanted an explanation as to why Ikea in Australia charges double and often more than double the American prices. That's how I found this blog. Surprised there aren't thousands of teed-off Aussies blogging about the same thing

The reason? Because Ikea CAN !

It's not the distance and its not 'Aussie high wages' which are to blame, imo (because ikea products are not produced in Australia, not made in Australia). It's because Ikea CAN charge double and more than double for the same items, here in Oz

So I'm disgusted with Ikea on that basis alone. Sick and tired of the world regarding Aussies as suckers

Anyone contacted Ikea in Australia to demand answers and some HUGE reduction in Oz prices?

I'm going to contact them and suggest everyone else does also. Because they are not going to stop ripping Aussies off until they're compelled to stop

I'm not interested in subsidising Americans, Europeans or anyone else. After all, Americans and Europeans etc. don't have to pay the massive prices for houses here in Oz. They don't have to pay the ridiculously high second-hand car prices as we in Oz are charged. Their food is less expensive outside Oz. Their travel costs are less expensive. Let's face it -- EVERYWHERE is less expensive across the board than here in Oz

and now Ikea is plundering Aussies as well

Sick of it. Disgusted with you, Ikea

and to show you how disgusted I am that I'm charged $59.00 a pair for Merete curtains, for example (when in the US they're $19.99) and to show you how disgusted I am by your Aussie prices for Besta furniture ........ I'm going to buy your Ikea products on Ebay, second-hand, for approximately the price Americans and Europeans are able to buy the same thing brand new !

Yes, Ikea -- I'm going to keep MY money in MY pocket, instead of in yours. How's that? No wonder ebay does a rocketing trade in used Ikea. Serves you right, Ikea

and thanks for allowing me to rant here. Ikea needs a good kick up the bum !

  5. I guess it's just up to the consumer. If the consumer is smart enough to get it cheaper then he deserves the discount.

  7. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog
that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates. I've been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.

  11. I've been browsing on-line more than 3 hours today, yet I never discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours. It's beautiful worth enough for me.
In my opinion, if all web owners and bloggers made just right content as you did,
the web will probably be a lot more useful than
    ever before.
